The beaver is North America’s largest rodent. Adult beavers weigh in at 30-50 lbs or more. Being an aquatic animal they spend their life in or around watercourses. Beavers are engineering marvels, with their abilities to cut, drag, and build. They will construct a “dam” on any water course that meets their sustainability. The Dam is structurally sound built with mud, sticks, and debris - also known as “chewings.” Once the beaver has claimed an area and dammed a water course, it then starts the build of an established colony. They are most busy at night patrolling their territory. Inspecting the dam and surroundings. Living in a structure called a :lodge” or a “den.” it may look like a pile of debris, which in fact is what they are constructed of. Beavers mate in the late fall, bringing “kit” beavers to the lodge anytime from March to June. Having anywhere from 3 to 5 in a litter - they are very nomadic.
The environmental and engineering marvels cause significant damage to the surroundings with the water. Water being backed up stream by the linear feet or miles, also the trees they claim along the way. Beaver fall trees at any size anywhere in their territory to help form their environment.
