The Groundhog is found all throughout PA. They prefer wide open spaces, often being spotted in your yard or driveway. Groundhogs are strictly herbivores eating fruits, plants, grass, to survive. They like cool ,damp places to reside and take up residence. Their claws and skill to dig allow them to dig massive cutouts or holes. It is common to find these holes next to an obstruction, but not limited to the wide open. The groundhog breeds in March and April having 2 to 6 young per litter. Groundhogs chew on wiring, wood, pvc piping, and just about anything in and around their den.
Diseases
Groundhogs are prone to lyme’s disease and powassan that can be contracted to people and pets. Along with being a carrier of the rabies virus.
Removal and prevention
Trapping the groundhog is the most effective way to remove them. Prevention methods can be offered and the nuisance animal is removed.
