A muskrat can be mistaken for a beaver, but their small size separates them. The muskrat is the largest microtive rodent. Spending its life in aquatic environments makes them well adapted for swimming. All the while swimming their territory, they can be extremely destructive with their burrowing habits along the watercourse. Muskrats are herbivores feeding on aquatic vegetation. Some field crops if the opportunity is in the area. Using their vegetation to their advantage, they will use the vegetation for their dens and burrows as part of the construction. The digging and burrowing is extremely dangerous to the public along waterways causing unstable ground.
Removal
Trapping is the most effective method in removing muskrats. Once the target animal is removed from the damaged area, exclusion and prevention methods may be offered.
